Do you have small brown spots on your face, hands, shoulders, arms, or back? These little brown spots are known as age spots, and they’re a huge problem for anyone over the age of 40, especially those who have fair skin.
These blemishes can be embarrassing, and can keep you from looking and feeling your very best. Fortunately, there are ways to treat existing spots. There are even a few ways to prevent future age spots. Here’s what you need to know.
What causes age spots?
Age spots are brought to you by the sun, or, more specifically, by UV light that generally comes from the sun. They’re like freckles, only larger and more dense, a collection of melanin that is attempting to protect your cells from deeper damage.
You can also get age spots from spending a little too much time in tanning beds, since you’re exposing yourself to UV light in the tanning bed, too.
Option #1: Photofacials
During a photofacial, your technician would use a gentle laser device that will break down the melanin in your skin—all without damaging any other part of your skin. It takes 7 days of treatment to rid yourself of age spots entirely, but after that your body will eliminate those little melanin particles, and your skin will be bright and clear once more.
Keep in mind that during treatment the dark spots briefly get darker. Then they flake away, and it’s like magic when they do!
Photofacials aren’t suitable for all skin types. Fortunately, you have another option.
Option #2: Tixel
Tixel is an extremely advanced skin resurfacing treatment. Your technician will use a medical-grade titanium device that combines motion and heat to rejuvenate your skin. This resurfacing will also break up the melanin in your skin.
To get good results with Tixel you’ll generally need three treatments scheduled every 4 to 6 weeks, and then you’ll need two additional maintenance treatments within the year.
Preventing Age Spots
Once you’ve chosen your treatment and have seen results, you of course will want to make sure you aren’t inviting any more age spots to appear.
Here are a few steps to take.
- Avoid going outside during the hottest parts of the day, between 10 AM and 3 PM.
- Wear sunscreen, even during the winter, and make sure it is a broad-spectrum sunscreen.
- Avoid tanning beds.
- Cover up: try hats, long sleeves, long pants, and sunglasses.
Remember, you should be especially vigilant if you have fair skin.
